FLEA BEACH

Welcome to Flea Beach, Shirley, BC

Along the waterfront in Shirley, BC, is a small sandy cove known affectionately as Flea Beach.  Located about 1 km to the west of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse site, Flea Beach is popular among local residents as a beautiful spot where you can actually access the ocean.  It has a few tide pools on its edges, a pebble beach, and a sandy intertidal area (exposed when the tide is low).

Flea Beach is not a park or a protected area – rather, it is a Right of Way belonging to the the Ministry of Transportation.

A brief history...

In 2013, the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society sought permission from the Ministry of Transportation to operate and maintain the Right of Way under license.  The first step was to evaluate the status of the property, consulting with Society members, the community and the staff of the Regional Parks Commission, to determine how the site should be cared for.  This resulted in development of a Vision Statement and work plan for the site. Visiting Flea Beach...

If you visit the beach, please keep in mind the following:

  •  The area is small, access is tight, and parking is minimal.  Please be considerate of others.
  • No overnight camping, parking or use is permitted.
  • Please respect the neighbours — the beach and foreshore is located between two private homes, and in the middle of a mature neighborhood.
  • Please keep noise to a minimum.
  • Do not cut, remove, change, trim, mow, cut, or otherwise affect the trees, plants, bushes or  foliage — a comprehensive remediation effort is underway.
  • Help keep the area clean and tidy — pick up your litter and pack out whatever you bring in.
  • Flea Beach is in an urban forest interface area – fires are a concern, no campfires or fires of any kind.
  • NO SMOKING anywhere at Flea Beach
  • ENTER AND USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Thank you for your cooperation and your support.
